Motor Cars

An AP report says this morning that Ford is laying off 15% of its white collar work force and does not expect to see profitability by 2009. As sad as I am that people will lose their jobs, at least it is white collar this time. And as sad as I am that Ford, a company that I'm emotionally attached to, is not doing well, at least it is not doing well because of the slow down in US auto sales. This is their karma coming back to bite them in the butt for focusing on those ridiculous monster vehicles. One day I hope to own a Ford, but until they get their act together it will be Toyota, or even Hyundai. Oh, but I do hope they get their act together and make a "green" Shelby convertible in candle apple red. I think I would just melt if such a thing existed.

As an aside, I heard rumors that the Hummer will no longer be produced. Though I don't know who makes those. But I'd certainly hate to have their karma!

Did I ever tell anyone the story about the Navajo guy that B and I met when we went to Santa Fe? We were driving around the country-side on our way to Taos, a city north of Santa Fe, stopping at little touristy places with clothe and other handmade goods. Well, here I was, feeling so proud of myself for supporting these local businesses, blah, blah, blah, when this guy who's keeping shop for his mom tells us that we should visit his own shop on our way back down to Santa Fe. So we ask for directions and he gives them...ending with a mention of how he has a hummer and that we'll know his shop because it will be the one with the hummer out front. Ugh! I don't know who I was more irritated with, myself for thinking of him in stereotypes, or him for being so proud of owning one of those horrible, horrible machines.

Now, what we really need is to start a scooter revolution!

I don't feel too sorry for Ford. They've been lagging behind in their engineering/innovation for years. And the whole SUV/truck thing...they really should have tried to move away from that years ago. It's not as if it hasn't been obvious for a while that they weren't sustainable.

GM makes Hummer. I don't think they're going to stop being made--GM will sell them to another company. Boo!
